History
The first Calvary Chapel began in 1965 as a non-denominational Christian church in Costa Mesa, California by pastor Chuck Smith, who became a leading figure in what has become known as the "Jesus Movement." Today, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, the church which started with only twenty-five members, has grown to a fellowship of approximately 1400 churches worldwide and has been listed as one of the ten largest Protestant churches in the United States.
Calvary Chapel of York began as a Bible study in January of 1999. A handful of people met in a home in West York under the leadership of Pastor Tony Montemurro, who was ordained and sent out of Calvary Chapel of Vineland, New Jersey. About one year later, the small group of believers began meeting at the York Little Theatre for Sunday morning services.
In September 2001, the Lord provided an opportunity to purchase an existing church building on North Sherman Street, where Calvary Chapel met for several years. Under the direction of the Lord, our fellowship continued to grow both spiritually and numerically. In response to the need for a larger facility and the Lord’s leading to minister in the city, the congregation purchased, renovated, and moved into the current Norway Street facility in April 2005.
The continuing goal of the leadership at Calvary Chapel of York is that all who come would meet with God personally and grown in their relationship with Him.
